Headed to West Africa
Image: one of the oldest photographs I could find of Benin. Obviously, it's not a representative snapshot of West Africa today, but any exploration of the future should start with a look at the past. Edmond Fortier, "An Indigenous Market in French West Africa." Circa 1900 photograph of a market scene in what was then the kingdom of Dahomey, situated in what is now the Republic of Benin.
I'm headed to West Africa for a few weeks on a reporting project. Ghana, Benin, and Togo. I'll be blogging notes from the road here as circumstances and connectivity permit. You should get in touch with Ato Dazdie from Journalists For Human Rights, he has an incredible amount of contacts. Best resource in Ghana.
I served in the Peace Corps in Benin. Not sure what you're coving but I'll look forward to your reports. If you get up north check out the Tata Somba mud architecture in Boukombe. And don't give the kids any presents! Ever! --
I know this comment is not post appropriate, but I noticed your post on boingboing and didn't know the correct way to respond. I think I miss Ghana too much and just got all excited to share;
I keep a little collection of funny Ghana signs too!
Some are on my http://shesaghana.blogspot.com space (favourites being 'Vasectomy - Give Yourself a Personal Smile,' and the one featuring bleeding privates).
