Guatemala: Market Report (video clip)

A mid-day walk through Antigua's mercado central. Link to video (in Flash or Quicktime). Some still screengrabs below, more here. (Tech notes: shot with Canon SD630 Elph. What cheap ultracompacts like this lack in ability to produce quality footage, they make up for in unobtrusiveness.).

Video still: Market snapshot

Video still: Yawning child selling strawberries

Thanks for your continued, wideranging, colorful reports from Guatemala Xeni!
I'm working on the Rigoberta Menchu book and also Bitter Fruit to try and
come up to speed. Will visit next year.

Xeni: Did you know there are only 800,000 surviving Maya? The Associated Press says so, see second paragraph of story linked below:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061205/ap_en_mo/apocalypto_mayas

This will certainly come as a shock to the 7 million or so who live in Guatemala.

Stunning photos. I'm so moved - from the baby in his traditional first bath to the market shots. It's a sign of a great journalistic photographer when no one's mugging for the camera.
