Guatemala

I'm in Guatemala for a while, researching some stories here. I'll be posting photos, video, and other notes from the road here on xeni.net/trek. Hello to you from Antigua, Guatemala -- where I can hear 400-year-old church bells ringing right now in the dark, along with night birds. The air smells like cooking fire smoke. Twin volcanoes of ash and water are sleeping soundly tonight (this is a good thing), and I will be in a few moments, too.

Don't forget to check out the Rainbow Reading Room while you're in Antigua! And there used to be a place to get a great cup of freshly roasted coffee run by an American expat or two.

You're in Guatemala? Amazing! If you're sticking around till Christmas, you can try their banana-leaf tamales. It's a special Christmas rice-based tamale (instead of corn in Mexican versions) that's simply incredible.

Xeni,

How long will you be in Guatemala? I'm planning a trip to Antigua in January.

Xeni,

Sounds like my old stomping grounds in Southern Baja. The pictures really bring back memories. Hope you're having a good time.

If you're going to be in Antigua for awhile do check out Cafe No Se. I used to tend bar there - always great live music and a well stocked bookstore. Lovely banana pancakes as well.
