Guatemala: Chicken Bus of the Sky

Chicken Bus of the Sky

Our ghetto-fabulous plane, a small Saab craft which shows its age, takes off from Guatemala City for a jungle destination in the Petén region of Guatemala. One of my Chapín flight-mates calls it the camioneta del cielo, or Chicken Bus of the Sky. It squeals like a stuck pig at takeoff and landing, and you know that ain't right. Assuming we arrive alive, I'll be posting video and photos from the selva soon.

Ah, the Petén! I envy you deeply, I'd love to be back there again. Please keep taking the excellent footage! I can heartily recommend taking a canoe out on the lake around Flores, if you get an afternoon spare ...

while i love the translation "chicken bus of the sky", _camioneta_ as far as i know means only bus, pick-up truck or van, being a native speaker. respectfully submitted.

@cazabache -- ah, I wrote this in haste, and the narrative is a little sloppy. We were joking around, and several derogatory names for the plane were uttered, one being "camioneta del cielo," another "chicken bus del cielo," and the one that the chapines laughed the most about, "tuk-tuk del cielo." I realize that "camioneta" doesn't mean "chicken bus" literally. consider this a truncated summary of a series of jokes among friends who were scared shitless by this sorry-ass plane. Bottom line: NEVER fly TAG airlines to the Peten area, always take Tikal Jets.

Xeni, I find out so incredible that you chose not to play with the words Chicken AirBus of the Sky.
