Guatemala: 2 interesting places to stay near Antigua

I haven't been to either of these places, but they both sound cool. One is owned by a fan of BoingBoing who introduced himself by email, and the other is owned by a couple of his friends.

The centrally-located Black Cat hostel opened in Antigua earlier this year, and from the sound of some of the posts on the Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree Forums, it seems quite popular among backpackers already. This little guy appears to be the resident mascot.

Earth Lodge offers treehouses, cabins, or dorm-style accommodations a short drive out of Antigua on a mountaintop avocado farm. An American and a Canadian opened it in 2003. Looks lovely online. Amazing, I was in Antigua a few weeks ago and stayed at both the Black Cat and Earthlodge.

Earthlodge is definitely great - the people who run it are nice, the place is beautiful and the food is good. And the treehouse... I finally fulfilled my ambition to stay in a real treehouse and it was everything I wanted it to be.

On the other hand, Black Cat is just another hostel.

Antigua would not have been the same without the Black Cat. It draws an amazing crowd of backpackers, it's safe, the owners and staff are welcoming and SO fun, clean rooms and washrooms, delicious food (& generous portions), great for those looking to go out for a night on the town, or just stay in and relax over a game of dominoes. I wouldn't stay anywhere else!

I just stayed at the black cat, and I have to say I was extreamely disappointed by the place. I had been hearing such good things about it, great staff, good breakfast, but when I got there, the staff was confused, and unorganized and very tense. I heard that there has been a change in management there, which is too bad, cause my friend had told me how fun and social it was. I stayed only one night and then I switched to Jungle Party the next day. For what ever The black cat was it's not anymore, which is too bad.
Love the earthlodge, It's truely amazing and relaxing there, a don't miss spot

I stayed in The Black Cat for about a month and it was fantastic 2 guys Matt & Con were running then and it was heaps of fun every night.

Plus the free breakfast kicked ass it was massive and tasted great!

I would love to go back to Antigua and when I do i will be going back to the Black Cat - I just hope it is still run by Matt & Con!

Cheers!

Ben
